Persistence for the common good: Penny Lukito leads Indonesia’s BPOM
“You have to be brave enough to be different and be persistent for the common good.”
This philosophy has been a guiding star for UW alumna Dr. Penny Lukito, who leads Indonesia’s FDA.
Lukito was appointed as head of the Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (translated as National Agency of Drug and Food Control of Indonesia) by President Joko Widodo on July 20, 2016. The agency, informally known as BPOM or Indonesia’s FDA, is responsible for protecting the public through oversight and control of vaccines, medications, food safety, nutrition, and cosmetics, among other products and services. Five UW-Madison students Awarded Boren Scholarships
Opportunities around the world have opened to five UW–Madison undergraduate students who have been announced as recipients of Boren Scholarships.
The recipients will receive up to $20,000 to study abroad in areas that are critically important to the U.S. and are underrepresented in study abroad, such as Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Nelson Tansu: Exceptionally Grateful for his Wisconsin Experience
As a child growing up in Indonesia during the late 1980s, Nelson Tansu (BS ’98, PhD ’03) always knew that his passion for science and natural curiosity would bring him to the United States for his education. His dream was to become a science professor.
Still, Tansu was truly taking a huge step into the unknown when he decided to enroll at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
UW–Madison Celebrates U.S.-Indonesia Relations
Seventy years ago, the U.S. and Indonesia established diplomatic ties, creating what would be a long, fruitful relationship. Students, faculty, staff, and community members gathered to mark that relationship at a day of activities attended by Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Mahendra Siregar and Consul General Rosmalawati Chalid.
During his remarks, Ambassador Siregar discussed the growth of Indonesia and highlighted points of pride such as a strong democracy.
